Last Friday, The Shenandoah County School board voted to return the names of Confederate leaders of the US military to two public schools in Virginia. They were removed at the black lives Matter movement peak four years ago in the US. This decision will take place on Thursday under the supervision of the community members from both sides facing issues. This meeting started in the evening and lasted till midnight when the Virginia school board voted 5-1 to return the original leaders’ names. These two schools’ names are Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby Lee Elementary School, which had linked Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Turner Ashby.
According to the Shenandoah, the total strength of students who gained education from the school is more than 5,600. Of this, almost 74% are white, 18% are Latinx, and the rest of the 3% are black. In 2020, Shenandoah voted to remove the names of Confederate leaders from public and private schools. After George Floyd’s death, police established the rate of incidents that happened at both national and international levels. After George’s death, the police officer of Minneapolis took away their names and encouraged them to remove general Confederate communities and symbols to maintain equity and justice. This move turns this criticism from the residents. Minneapolis says it was a swift reaction to change the name.

The efforts to restore the Confederate names after this incident and there had been vocal opposition for a long time. This vote debated to change the school’s names ended in 2022. The letter assigned by the coalition group to the school board disturbed the vote last Thursday. In this letter, they said we needed to change the name as per the rule and or respect our community. The group also said it was essential for us, a part of our local history, and for respecting our majority wishes.
According to the state survey, the letter also states that recovery support exists. In this meeting held on Thursday, women focused on the board and asked the reasons behind the honour of the school name by Confederate soldiers. The Proponents argued that this name change was the reaction to leaving the knee-jerk and respecting South American history.
The opponents claim the confederate shows and respect the discrimination who sought for the sake of preventing America from slavery. This voting time comes under attention when the US conservation group repels the efforts in opposition to building the United States to count generation in educational settings. These educational settings included banning racial books in the libraries and when they started diversifying the derailing projects.
